On September 14 1999, the WeMaLU group put on a Linux Demo Days demonstration at the UMass campus center in Amherst, MA. The demonstration was an astounding success. A lot of great information about Linux distributed.
We had four demo machines setup, running RedHat, Slackware, Suse, with XWindows, from fvwm, kde and nextstep. Demoing apps from Quake, WordPerfect, Apache, Netscape, to Xanim movie players and mp3 players.
